About

Hi, my name is Tim Poeppel and I am the fun-guy behind Tato’s Mushrooms. I grew up in Germany and moved to Canada in 2016 to be with my partner Irena. Gardening and growing food was always a passion, and we still have a decent sized vegetable garden in our front and back yard. During the pandemic I started to grow mushrooms in different setups and got more and more into it. In early 2022 I took an opportunity, built my first mushroom farm in our basement and started selling my first oyster mushrooms at the Guelph Farmers’ Market. Over time I added more varieties and as of early 2025 I grow 9 different oyster mushrooms and six different specialty mushrooms over the course of the year.

Currently I am setting up my second farm in a larger space to increase production capacity and efficiency. With the new farm up and running you will see a few new mushrooms and other related products.

The name Tato’s Mushrooms originates in our trilingual family. Our three children grow up speaking Macedonian with my partner and German with me. In Macedonian “tato” means father or dad and our children called me “tato” before they learned to differentiate between the three languages and started to call me “papa”.
